Fanfare as 2022 National Sevens Circuit Ends, Menegai Oilers Crowned Champions

The Menengai Oilers are the 2022 National Sevens Circuit champions.

The Oilers, who had lifted the Prinsloo Sevens title the previous weekend, beat Kabeberi Sevens champion KCB Rugby 17-12 in the semi-final of Kakamega Sevens at the Bullring, Kakamega on Sunday.

Consistency paid dividends for the Oilers, who collected 22 points from their victory in Kakamega for their total tally of 116 points.

Mwamba Rugby Club rallied from behind to edge out Menengai Oilers 21-7 to lift the Driftwood Sevens title at the Mombasa Sports Club.

Homeboyz would humble Menengai Oilers 19-14 in the cracking final to be crowned Dala Sevens at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, Kisumu.

KCB settled for third in Kakamega after whipping the Leos 21-14 in the playoff as Homeboyz finished fifth after getting the better of Nakuru 26-7 in the playoff.

KCB RFC who were the series defending champions, settled second in the series with 107 points followed by the Leos with 100 points.

The National Sevens Circuit which was making a return after a two-year Covid-induced break lived up to expectations as fans turned up in their numbers to cheer on their favorite teams at each of the tournament’s six legs.

Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) through its flagship brand Tusker sponsored each of the six tournaments with Ksh. 2 Million, taking the overall sponsorship for the circuit to Ksh. 12 million. They included; Kabeberi Sevens, Christie Sevens, Driftwood Sevens, Prinsloo Sevens, Dala Sevens, and Kakamega Sevens.

Through the sponsorship, Tusker which is celebrating its 100-year milestone secured the rights to be the event’s Official Alcohol Beverage partner, and also sponsored the events’ after-parties.

The return of the Sevens Circuit was received with much joy as fans thronged the different venues across the country, with many expressing their delight at the return, as well as staying on for the after-party, which was headlined by a host of top-ranking deejays.

The Tusker brand is synonymous with Kenyan rugby and has a rich history of supporting the sport locally with the aim of raising its standards. The sponsorship was also part of KBL’s commitment to continue supporting sports in the country as part of its centenary celebrations.
